Executive Coaching
One of the great joys of my
career is sharing with people who want to improve how and why they do
their work. With the rate of change today, with public perception of
leadership diminished, individuals should use all the resources available
to them. "Executive coaching" doesn't really imply, to me, that someone
needs 'coaching';. Rather, it is an unremarkable term that signifies a
person's desire to have an unconditionally honest and compassionate
response to an executive's question about his/her progress in an
organization.
It is so very hard to
obtain those answers internally for so many reasons: (a) people need to
protect their own jobs and don't want to be vulnerable; (b) people really
don't know the answer and don't want to appear incompetent; (c) people are
limited by their own job restraints and fail to think strategically beyond
their position.
An executive coach offers
a number of services:
a. private coaching on key leadership issues that will position a person
for greater challenge
b. "just in time" coaching on important strategic directions
c. assistance in hiring the right team that will complement an
executive's skills
d. an ongoing non-negotiable honesty that is difficult to find
e. the exploration of personal mastery
I have worked with boards
of directors, presidents of companies, and university chancellors and
provosts. While the environments may differ, many of the problems are
similar. My 35 years of experience in working with over 300 organizations
has been invaluable to these clients.
